Language is more fashion than science, and matters of usage, spelling, and pronunciation tend to wander around like hemlines. ~ Bill Bryson, author (1951- )
I've enjoyed almost everything Bryson has written. His books and articles are laugh-out-loud funny. My favorites are A Walk in the Woods (about his trek along the Appalachian Trail), In a Sunburned Country (about his trek through Australia - amazing place, that), A Short History of Nearly Everything (he isn't kidding), and At Home, a fascinating and funny tour of his home and the history of homes and house-building in general.

Eats, Shoots & Leaves, by Lynne Truss. It gets the name from a misplaced comma in a description of a panda. The writing brings a grin and occasionally a laugh, and lots of commiserating nods, especially to someone who deals with words all day.
